Weekly Photo Challenge: Curves

This is my photographic response to this week’s photo challenge by The Daily Post. I like taking photos, especially for this type of challenge. I find it leads me to see the world differently. And seeing the world differently is something I always find enriching.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting

This is my photographic response to this week’s photo challenge by The Daily Post. I like taking photos, especially for this type of challenge. I find it leads me to see the world differently. And seeing the world differently is something I always find enriching.

This first photo is of a vernal pool.

Vernal pools are bodies of water whose water levels vary greatly throughout the year; some even dry up entirely during the summer months. Being free of fish, vernal pools are ideal spots for frog, salamander, and caddisfly young to mature before they move on to their adult habitats. Fairy shrimp even complete their entire life cycle in these temporary wetlands. This one at Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Worcester, Massachusetts, seems to be going fairly strong for mid-June.

And then here we have a damselfly.

If you’ve ever tried to photograph a damselfly, you know why I thought of them for this challenge. I captured this one in Northborough, Massachusetts, before she flew away. The fleeting moment I didn’t get to photograph on this hike was the dragonfly that captured a bug and then landed on my jacket to consume its prey. My “Holy crap, it’s a dragonfly!” scared it away before I could grab my camera, though.

Weekly Photo Challenge: The Sign Says

This is a sign left under a basement light switch by the previous owners of our home. I find the whole thing delightful, from the fact that it’s a notecard stuck crookedly onto the faux-wood panelling with a push-pin, to the misspelling, to the underlining of the word “switch.” I’d thought of penning my own replacement sign, but I would miss this one too much.

Now that I think about it, my new blog header—and the original one, too, for that matter—is kind of an “in the background” photo. Must be something I like to do with my photos.

I don’t require a lot for “escape.”

I’d love to take a big road trip or a long hike or a week (or so) in a cabin in the woods, but after a week with my spouse away on business, all I really want is my Moleskine, my favorite pen, selections from my TBR list, my noise-cancelling headphones, and a view of the bird feeders (and not the patch of poison ivy it turns out I’ve been walking through to fill the bird feeders).

In this vein, I’m also taking this opportunity to kick off a week-long social media fast. I hope to spend this week reading and journaling and catching up with my postal correspondence and just in general trying to get Facebook and my blog to loom a little less large in my life than they have been recently. If I finish a book and decide to review it on Goodreads, I’ll crosspost the review here, but otherwise, I’m just going to unplug.

While I’m away, you can look forward to a couple of fun (and slightly different) posts that I have in the works. One is the premier Sisters Book Club book review (of Ian McEwan’s Sweet Tooth), which has been much longer in the making than I’d planned. The other is a Reader Request post, about which I’m quite excited. So, have a pleasant week, and I’ll see you back here for some fun stuff when I return!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Pattern

The first three pictures are patterns from our homeschool nature class (in this class we learned about eggs). The fourth picture features a different type of pattern from a sewing lesson my daughter and I shared early this week.

Our part of New England has a large Portuguese-speaking population (mostly from Brazil, but I’ve learned we also have a large Cape Verdean community. Until about a month ago, I’d never even heard of Cape Verde). As a result, we have this interesting juxtaposition of traditional New England architecture and businesses featuring signs in Portuguese. It’s kind of cool. This first photo is an example of that.
